Authorities Nurture Burma’s Buddhist Chauvinism, Analysts Say

Originally posted by The Buddhist Channel

Saffron Revolution called for love and democracy, hundreds of monks marching this week in Mandalay called for the expulsion of one of the world’s most oppressed minorities, the Rohingya.

BANGKOK, THAILAND — Burma’s Buddhist monk-led demonstrations this week against the Muslim minority Rohingya surprised many observers.  Analysts say the country’s Buddhist chauvinism was shaped by authorities’ attempts to form a national identity.  But there are worries it could get out of control.

Burma’s Buddhist monks stage a rally to protest against minority Rohingya Muslims in Mandalay, central Burma, September 2, 2012.

This week’s protests were the first large monk-led demonstrations in Burma since the 2007 uprising against military rule. But they were a stark contrast to that earlier movement.

While the 2007 Saffron Revolution called for love and democracy, hundreds of monks marching this week in Mandalay called for the expulsion of one of the world’s most oppressed minorities, the Rohingya.

The monks were supporting a suggestion by President Thein Sein that the Muslim minority, numbering close to a million, should be segregated and deported.
The extremist calls follow violent summer clashes between Buddhists and Rohingya in western Rakhine state that left 90 people dead.

Sectarian tensions are so high they overshadowed the fact that President Thein Sein was Prime Minister in 2007 when the military government violently cracked down on Buddhist monks.

Maung Zarni, a visiting researcher at the London School of Economics, says authorities are harnessing Buddhist nationalism.

“These generals are considered monk killers,” he said. “And, you know, the world [has] seen images of like troops shooting Buddhist monks in the Saffron Revolution.  Now, they have successfully refashioned themselves as defenders of Buddhist faith, protectors of Buddhist communities in western Burma.  And, it’s actually extremely brilliant, if dangerous, you know, political calculation.”

Burma’s monks have taken lead roles in times of popular unrest, earning them the reputation of being champions of democracy and freedom.

The 2007 Saffron Revolution takes its name from the color of monks’ robes.

Buddhist monks were also key supporters of a 1988 student democracy uprising that the military similarly put down by force.

But while those struggles were noble, analysts say historically Burma’s Buddhism has been influenced by a racist nationalism that occasionally re-surfaces.

Juliane Schober is a scholar studying Burma’s Buddhist traditions at Arizona State University.

“In this particular instance it seems to be a case where there is a lot of debate about what constitutes Burmese identity.  And, the saying, you know, ‘to be Burmese is to be Buddhist’ is one that was first articulated in the early 1910s when the initial struggles for independence became and it was a way of asserting Burmese identity vis-à-vis British colonial rule,” said Schober.

Burma’s first prime minister after independence, U Nu was a devout Buddhist. He eventually steered a bill through parliament that made Buddhism Burma’s state religion in 1961.

Burma is about 90 percent Buddhist and majority ethnically Burman, but the remaining people are a diverse group of over 100 ethnic and religious minorities.

Ethnic groups along the border make up most of the armed rebels that have been seeking some form of autonomy, leading some to question the loyalty of minorities.

Rachel Fleming is Advocacy Director for the Chin Human Rights Organization.  She says the Christian Chin in western Chin state were viewed as such a threat to national identity that monks were dispatched to try to convert them to Buddhism.

“The significance of that is those monks were primarily loyal to military rule and Burma army soldiers exacted forced labor from Chin Christians to build Pagodas and monasteries for those monks,” she said.

Fleming says while Buddhism is treated as the defacto state religion, with a special recognition in the constitution, authorities tear down unauthorized Christian churches and crosses.

While authorities have at times emphasized the country’s diversity, the Buddhist Burman majority was singled out as the trustworthy pillar of national identity.

Aung Thu Nyein with the Vahu Development Institute says authorities have long sought to impose the Burman majority views on the population by keeping minorities out of power.

“They don’t have any written laws and regulations, but practically, in the military if you are a Christian or if you are a Muslim you won’t be promoted up to major ranks.  You won’t be a senior leader in the military,” he said.

Analysts and rights activists worry Burma is fostering a xenophobia that, if left unchecked, could get out of control.

Phil Robertson is Deputy Director for Asia with Human Rights Watch.  He says if more people fail to speak up, Burma could be headed towards a Buddhist xenophobia similar to the Sinhalese in Sri Lanka.

“And that’s the concern that we see today in Burma that if this continues, if the Burmese monkhood continues to come out and press against the Rohingya in this way, will we be on the road to a kind of Sri Lanka situation with the Rohingya where you have Buddhists across Burma raising their hands against Rohingya,” he said.

Burma media reports say while authorities allowed the monks’ three-day demonstration to take place, as it got bigger, they tried to discourage it.

The Five Mountain Zen Order was founded in 2008 by Ven. Dr. Paul Wonji Lynch following his departure from the Golden Wind Zen Sangha and the Kwan Um School of Zen while wondering if there might be a better way to approach the Dharma in the 21st Century. He envisioned a practice that would allow Zen practitioners to actually engage in the world “with helping hands.” After discovering so many arbitrary requirements in other Zen Orders regarding orthodoxy, orthopraxy and compliance, he felt that a revived direction, informed by the great Zen Masters of the Sung and Tang Dynasties might be in order. The mission of this unique religious organization of decentralized peers is to establish and maintain public practice and teachings in accordance with the principles of Zen Buddhism as transmitted through a lineage of masters too many to list here. The direction however involves a commitment, first and foremost, to the student, as well as a commitment to the teaching and education of that student that will enable he or she to carry on the tradition in an open and diverse manner yet staying true to the teaching that has been handed down for centuries. Zen Teachers, as a genre, spend far too little ‘face time’ with their students. Many students are limited to between 5 and 20 minutes a month, and it seems that a majority get to see a teacher maybe once a month at best, hardly time to engage in the matters of life and death. After much study and examination of the way the ancients taught their students, he decided that a Student Centric approach to Zen was in order. This means that teachers spend time, at least an hour a week working with each of their students. Of course, Five Mountain will be limited in its growth, because this is a huge commitment for the teacher. But Wonji feels this is a most effective way to transmit the dharma and today we need more quality and less quantity.

Secondly, there is not a Buddhist Organization in the World that ordains individuals without their postulants attending and graduating from a formal Buddhist University, that is except in the West where almost every Zen Organization has adopted the “Bodhidharma Syndrome.” This developed from a statement that is supposed to attributed to the great Zen Founder Bodhidharma.

If you pass through this gate,
do not give rise to thinking
not dependent on words and speech,
a special transmission outside the scriptures.

Because of this almost every Zen Organization in the West has abandoned any form of formal education. There are a few recent exceptions, the Taego Order, the Fo Guang Order and the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas being a few of them of them. It should be noted that each of these exceptions are Asian Orders with large centers in the US. The others that have curriculums are focused on single paths like Chaplaincy or Hospice Care. The fact is that every one of these Asian Teachers who came to the West had at least a Bachelors Degree if not an Advanced Masters or Doctorate degree in Buddhist Dharma. It was expected of them, and it should be expected of western practioners as well. This is why the Five Mountain Zen Order has a Zen College and a Graduate School to augment the students studies with their individual teacher. Ultimately, the age-old principles of Zen will be carried on through the formal education and intuitive realization of the Order’s members as they seek to save all beings from suffering, through developing charity, love, compassion and awareness.

FMZO maintains no affiliations with other Zen organizations or religious denominations; however, membership in the FMZO community does not preclude individual affiliation with other groups. Within the FMZO there is no hierarchy amongst Dharma successors. Zen Buddhism is universal; the medium and methods used to facilitate realization vary according to each individual’s circumstances. Dharma successors within the FMZO may apply varied practice approaches and resolve on the structure of any construct that she or he may develop to facilitate practice.

Our Dharma successors recognize they are ongoing students and that the value of their teaching derives from the quality of their practice. As continuing students, our teachers are dedicated to the openness and flexibility of practice, wherein the wisdom of the unconditional may be manifest in life.

A vital component of the Five Mountain Zen Order community is the continuing examination and expansion of efficacious instruction approaches to ensure all-inclusive observation in every aspect of life.

New Pew Survey on Asian-Americans and Religion, and an Old Controversy

Originally posted by Buddhism About.Com.

Asian-Americans and religion, the numbers!

The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life has come out with a new survey, this time focusing on Asian-Americans and religion. I haven’t had time to look through it carefully, but one thing jumped out at me right away.

“While Asian Americans make up a majority of U.S. Buddhists, roughly a third of American Buddhists are non-Asian; the Pew Forum estimates that 67%-69% of Buddhists in the U.S. are Asian,” it says. That’s not a startling statistic, but it is very much at odds with a Pew survey released in 2008, which said that only 32 percent of Buddhists in the U.S. are ethnic Asians. Big difference.

I see, however, that the older survey — still online — has not been corrected.Arun of Angry Asian Buddhist has written several posts about this, demonstrating that the older numbers just don’t crunch. See, for example, “Stop Using the Pew Study” from September 2010. Arun’s “back-of-the-envelope” rough calculation found that the percentage of U.S. Buddhists who are ethnic Asians had to be closer to 62 percent than 32 percent. Turns out Arun was right.

The 32 percent figure from 2008 has been picked up by journalists and sociologists ever since it was published. From this number many conclusions have been drawn about Buddhism in the U.S. that are, obviously, invalid. Arun has argued that the older Pew survey numbers have the effect of marginalizing Asian Americans.

Other than that — and again, I’ve only looked through the new survey quickly —  the next most interesting thing was comparing Buddhists in the 2008 survey and the new survey in areas of social issues. From this I take it that ethnic Asian Buddhists tend to be more conservative than the Buddhists sampled in 2008.

The 2008 crew tended to lean heavily toward being liberal in political and social outlook, whereas the new survey shows Asian American Buddhists tend to be closer to the U.S. general public in political and social outlook. That’s hardly startling, but it suggests that the 2008 survey did not present an accurate picture of U.S. Buddhists.

Minnesota Judge Has 200 Blunt Words for Divorcing Parents

Although some may feel it is rare, some judges actually know what they are talking about. Received a copy of a news article from 2001. Thought I would take the time to type the words of this judge out.
Please note in our discussion group over the years with one common goal in mind “Defending Ourselves against False Allegations.” Although this article eludes to Parent Alienation, here is one thought we all may want to consider: “We do not OWN Our Children. We as adults are merely here to Guide them through Sharing, Caring, and Guidance, with the hopes, that they too will become Responsible Adults. Noting, of course, Responsibility is not necessarily a Democratic Process?”

So here is the article by the judge:

Minnesota Judge Has 200 Blunt Words
for Divorcing Parents
By Judge Michael Haas
2001
“Your children have come into this world because of the two of you. Perhaps you two made lousy choices as to whom you decided to be the other parent. If so, that is your problem and your fault.

No matter what you think of the other party—or what your family thinks of the other party—these children are one-half of each of your. Remember that, because every time you tell your child what an “idiot” his father is, or what a “fool” his mother is, or how bad the absent parent is, or what terrible things that person has done, you are telling the child half of him is bad.

That is an unforgivable thing to do to a child. That is not love. That ispossession. If you do that to your children, you will destroy them as surely as if you had cut them into pieces, because that is what you are doing to their emotions.

I sincerely hope that you do not do that to your children. Think more about your children and less about yourselves, and make yours a selfless kind of love, not foolish or selfish, or your children will suffer.”

Original Article
The following advice from retired Minnesota Judge has been circulating for years among judges, attorneys and child advocates as powerful words of advice for all parents going through a divorce.  We hope you’ll take the time to read them!
Judge Michael Haas retired in December 2002 after 26 years of service as a Judge in Cass County, Minnesota.  In a letter written to advice columnist Abigail Van Buren as early as October 1994 by attorney Paul J. Kiltinen of Baxter, Minnesota, Mr. Kiltinen shared the following remarks by Judge Hass in a particularly difficult divorce case, describing the Judge’s remarks as “some of the most profound words of wisdom I’ve ever heard from the bench in all my years as an attorney.  His philosophy could provide insight to all parents, especially those who are involved in difficult dissolutions.”
Judge Haas’ concise advice in less than 200 words is so well known and so widely respected that it has been referenced in multiple appellate court decisions, includingBurke v. Burke, Tennessee Court of Appeals, No. M2000-01111-COA-R3-CV, Aug. 7, 2001 and Krupp v. Cunningham-Grogan, Tennessee Court of Appeals, No. M2005-01098-COA-R3-CV, August 29, 2006.
It’s also been cited in Lawyers Weekly USA No. 9921543 and in Don R. Ash’s law review article, Bridge Over Troubled Water: Changing the Custody Law in Tennessee, 27 U. Mem. L. Rev. 769, 771-72 (1997).
This message was “resurrected” in 2000 when it was republished as a letter published by advice columnist Ann Landers (the twin sister of “Dear Abby”).
More than 15 years after the fact, Judge Haas’ moving words are sprinkled all over the Internet, found on court websites, blogs, attorney webpages, in court decisions and in law journals.
We don’t know if Judge Haas was speaking extemporaneously on the record or if these 197 words above were purely “off the cuff”.  Regardless, this message will always remain profound and powerful advice when parents are ready to engage in custody battles for their children.

Chinese Beggars Forced To Sit Behind Bars During Annual Fair For ‘Protection’

To prepare for an influx of visitors for an annual temple fair, Chinese officials decided to get their beggars out the way by shutting them up in an iron cage.

The Xishan Wanshou Palace Temple Fair, which takes place on the seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar, fell out on Sept. 15 this year and brought in 200,000 tourists, BBC reports. Officials told China News that they feared stampedes and beggars bothering visitors, so they decided to contain about 100 beggars from the town of Xishan, in China’s southern Jiangxi province in a 165-foot-long iron cage.

“We had to consider both sides: the pilgrims and the beggars,” the head of the civil affairs office of the Xinjian prefecture government told NBC. “There are some fake beggars who just want to trick money from pilgrims. We did see the pilgrims were harassed by such beggars in the past. On the other hand, the temple fair is so crowded that beggars might be hit by cars or trampled by the crowd.”

The beggars voluntarily entered the cage, according to the news outlet.

Chinese Beggers

But when photos of the confined beggars emerged on Sina Weibo, China’s popular version of Twitter, critics became outraged. The images were forwarded to more than 30,000 users and generated 4,000 comments by Sept. 18, according to China News.

Some were particularly incensed because of the festival’s spiritual origins, NBC reports. Such fairs began as an opportunity to worship and pray for happiness, peace and luck, and now involve eating, shopping, and recreational activities, according to the Beijinger.

But officials insist that the beggars were given food and water and that the cages were only put in place as “to take protective measures.”

Hunger in America: Rescuing Food, Rescuing People

Originally posted by Buddhist Global Relie.

To cherish one’s blessings, no food should be wasted.

More than 1 billion people suffer from hunger. Yet, a federal study found nearly 100 billion pounds of edible food was wasted by U.S. retailers, food service businesses, and consumers in a single year. For a family of four, that amounted to 122 pounds of food thrown out each month in grocery stores, restaurants, cafeterias, and homes.

All of the food we receive comes, at least in part, from the effort and generosity of others.  We have every reason to receive it with a sense of gratitude and thankfulness.  To cherish one’s blessings, no food should be wasted.

To remedy the shameful waste of food, Buddhist Global Relief supports the practice of “food rescue“: safely retrieving edible food from grocery stores, vendors, farmers’ markets, and restaurants that would otherwise go to waste, and distributing it to those in need.  For example, one of BGR’s newest partners,City Harvest, Inc. of New York City, responds to the urgent needs of thousands of hungry NYC residents, rescuing 29 million pounds of food this past year and delivering it free of charge to food pantries and soup kitchens.

For information on food recovery organizations in your area, contact Feeding America at             1-800-771-2303      .  You can learn more about hunger in America and what you can do to help at www.Feeding America.org.  For information on “gleaning” (collecting leftover crops from farmers’ fields after they have been commercially harvested or on fields where it is not economically profitable), contact The Society of St. Andrew‘s national office at            1-800-333-4597      .

Restaurants and grocery stores interested in donating food can contact Food Donation Connection at             1-800-831-8161      . They link donors with food recovery organizations. Businesses can also make donations of food by becoming a Feeding America “product partner“.

We are grateful that there are so many ways to help.

What Good are Sutras Anyway?

For those who lean towards Zen, the question may be asked “What are Sutras good for?”

Before we get to that question, let’s look at Buddhism in general. Zen is waking up to our original nature, not our original Buddhist nature – So why Buddhism?

Since the Buddha woke up over 2500 years ago, the Buddhists have been helping people to wake up. They have also been writing about it. The writings have taken many directions. A few examples: Some writings work to dispense the wisdom people have found when they have woken up. These teachings can help us by give us focus on correct direction. Some teachings try to point the way to help people to wake up. These teachings give us hard earned knowledge on how to practice. Some teachings sort of mix the two by providing abstract concepts that cannot really be understood by the thinking mind. These teachings cause great confusion, helping us keep don’t know mind.

Many of these Buddhists who came before us spent most of their lives as full-time Monks. They spent much time practicing and passing on what they learned. As a result, there is a huge storehouse of knowledge in the Buddhist Sutras.

For each of us that turn to Buddhism and meditation, we get exposed to many of these teachings. We can then see which types of teachings resonate with us. Even those of us who gravitate toward a certain type of teaching can still find use in many of the other types. Also, when we encounter people who are interested in Zen, we can gauge their leanings and introduce the types of teachings that may be most useful to them.

As Zen students, we see that Sutras have their place and we don’t get hung up on any of them or treat them dogmatically. In fact, a single moment beyond words is worth more than any Sutra. So we treat them accordingly. Here is a short gatha from one of the Korean masters (Sanshan (Denglai)) from long ago:

Talk produces many lifeless but marvelous meanings
The tip of the tongue lacks bone but bears lies
So to accept words and stick with sentences ultimately is of no use
And what can you do with a frozen mind?

What does this mean?
